Submitting Images on behalf of our talent

[edit]

Hi my name is Sebastian Coe, we are a talent agent that is representing and promoting our talent who is a dancer and film model. We are the team that have taken images at her events and want to submit them to Wikimedia. Previously there were fans submitting images on a voluntary basis, but they get deleted. What is the correct process for us to submit images from our archives ourselves? We want to adhere to the protocols you have but need to find a way to submit images on a regular basis maybe in batches. We own these images and they were taken for promotion purposes. Please advise.

Sincerely Seb Coe Relations and Marketing Talent Management Services Maria Ford Images (talk) 21:28, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello Sebastian et al.,
you have to become aware of several points. First and foremost, I'm advising that you read the links provided in the welcome message on your user page. For the remainder, I will write or emphasize things below.
  1. Wikimedia Commons, this site here, is a media repository. We have other content-related rules than the encyclopedias under the Wikipedia brand. The acceptance of content here is governed by licensing and project scope-related rules.
  2. Assuming that you are a group of several people creating media, you have to document who took what imagery and preserve this info before thinking about uploading here. At least, you have to be certain about the copyright situation. Commons cares a lot about copyright / moral author rights.
  3. Assuming that one or two people are in charge of operating this account, "Maria Ford Images", and that these people aren't necessarily those who produced the imagery, you have to observe the procedures outlined on Commons:Uploading works by a third party. In short, you have to provide evidence that the actual account operator is entitled to upload media made by a third party.
  4. Commons has mechanisms in place for this use case. There are teams of volunteers which task it is to document licensing permissions among others. See Commons:Volunteer Response Team, specifically the section #Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?.
  5. For the VRT contact, you should use an official E-Mail address, let's say with a domain name relating to your agency.
  6. I think that most questions will be answered on the VRT page. Send the info you prepared following the second bullet point to the relevant address.
    • You may eventually chose to upload media with the tag {{Permission pending}}, if you do this, make sure you're including the relevant file names in the VRT documentation.
  7. Last but not least, you're obviously in some relationship involving payments, remunerations, salaries or similar. So, please be aware of Commons:Guidance for paid editors, and, for everything that is related to edits on Wikipedia sites, foundation:PAID.
Thank you for asking about relevant procedures! This IMHO show some respect towards the project and its volunteers. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:54, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello and welcome @Timothy R. Brummer, I can see that the image you tried to upload was blocked by the Cross-wiki upload filter. Maybe try uploading it directly to Commons using this: Special:UploadWizard. Tvpuppy (talk) 01:43, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Timothy R. Brummer: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:00, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

How to use infobox

[edit]

Trying to add an infobox for new category Lyon's Inn, it should be similar to the one on Barnard's Inn, the data seems to be there on Wikidata but it won't automatically fill the box? Plutonto (talk) 11:45, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Plutonto: The Wikidata item needs to be linked to the Wikimedia Commons category. There are two steps to take on wikidata:Q15243205:
  • Under "Multilingual sites", add "commons" with value "Category:Lyon's Inn"
  • Add a new statement, "Commons category" (P373) with value "Lyon's Inn".
Once you've done that, the Wikidata Infobox on the Commons category should automatically populate with data. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 12:18, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Image comparison tool

[edit]

Does Wikimedia offer a tool to display a comparison of two or more images, for example in a before/after style, with a slider to allow the viewer to pan over either version of the picture? OceanLoop (talk) 00:34, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • @OceanLoop: Not that I'm aware of, but on a PC at least, I find it easy enough to place them in two different tabs and compare.
  • FWIW, in another context I built a client-side tool to do this (JavaScript + HTML Canvas). The problem is that because it has to go pixel-by-pixel, it is pretty computation-intensive. - Jmabel ! talk 03:38, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps such functionality could be added to the Wikimedia repertoire to make such visualizations possible; I wanted to show coastal erosion in File:Damon Point, Grays Harbor County, Washington, July 13, 1974.jpg and File:Damon Point, Grays Harbor County, Washington, August 13, 2023.jpg as a dynamic feature. OceanLoop (talk) 04:28, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Actually, now that I reread, what you want is simpler than what I was thinking: I was thinking of something that specifically highlights the discrepancies between the images. The slider thing, with each image staying as it was, is pretty easy to do, certtainly with JavaScript + HTML Canvas, but probably without even using Canvas (just a partial display of each image, continually changing the dimensions and cropping of an IMG element as you move the slider). I'm pretty sure that anyone with the skills and inclination could knock that out pretty quickly. Of course, it only would work well if both images are taken from the same POV with the same focal length. - Jmabel ! talk 17:46, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

How can I publish my draft article on Japanese Wikipedia?

[edit]

Hello, and thank you for your time.

I’ve created a draft article on the Japanese Wikipedia about the concept of “遊暮働学” (Yūbodōgaku), which is a lifestyle philosophy integrating play, living, work, and learning.

Here is the sandbox draft: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%88%A9%E7%94%A8%E8%80%85:SimpleLifeNotes/sandbox

I would like to ask: - What are the next steps to have this article reviewed and moved to the main article space? - Is there a specific process for requesting review on the Japanese Wikipedia? - Approximately how long does it take until the draft is accepted or rejected?

Thank you in advance for your guidance and help! SimpleLifeNotes (talk) 07:07, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

You're not asking the question on the right place.
"Wikimedia Commons" is not "Wikipedia in Japanese".
This question have to be asked on this "Wikipedia".

Maybe there are people who could help you on "Commons" even if this is not the right place. Anatole-berthe (talk) 07:21, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Archival pictures

[edit]

There are pictures from archives that are accessible through the Swedish National Archival Database and that are free to download. There should not be any issues uploading that to the wikimedia commons, right? FQuan (talk) 07:34, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

To clarify, it is freely available for download for anybody: it is freely downloadable for anybody:

As I don't speak Swedish, I have to rely on translations, but as far as I can tell, the copyright page says that while the archive might have the right to show all these images, users don't necessarily have the right to use these images. This is quite general, so if you find a page that gives some explicit information about the rights for an image, that would be welcome. --rimshottalk 14:48, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Accidentally started a duplicate deletion request

When I started a bulk deletion request here, I'm afraid I didn't notice that one of the files in question had already been nominated for deletion by another editor here. (Sorry about that oversight on my part.) So, there are currently two open deletion nominations for the same image. What should be done in this situation? How to succesfully use "Kit_body" specific club patterns for association football kits uploaded by me?

[edit]

I have uploaded 3 different "kit_body" svg files with club specific patterns, but non of them is working no matter what I do. I tried with two and assumed it was because of the name I gave the file when I uploaded it here, I already asked for it to be changed for the correct way. But the last one that I upload it I made sure that the name was correct, but it is still not working. I am not sure if maybe there is something wrong with the file itself, maybe the editing I did is bad. Can someone help me understand how can I make club specific patterns that works? Upload Japanese manholes images in Wikimedia Commons

[edit]

I decided upload Japanese manholes images that photographed by me. but can i upload Japanese manholes images that I photographed by me? and are Japanese manholes design with emblems or more copyrighted or public domain? GeoShira (talk) 03:58, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

For Japanese copyright questions, we have a plage providing an overview: COM:JAPAN. I think that it's not too far-fetched to see manholes and their covers as architectural works, as buildings. So, even if there is something copyrightable on such covers, the Japanese Freedom of panorama provisions (see: COM:FOP Japan) would allow their depiction and a hosting on Commons, as long as these manholes are on public streets and the like. jessica alba

[edit]

I am informing that it is wrong information that Danny Ramirez is a Partner/boyfriend/ in a relationship with Jessica Alba. She has 3 kids and it hurts them to read about something like that on a serious place like Wikipedia. I assume you change the fault information or "Fake Rumors" that is only based on Rumors. They are just friends and also working on future film projects. Oyvind olav (talk) 14:01, 23 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

BZZZT!! You should really take a look at Category:Jessica Alba, it's right there. That is rooted in Wikidata, not Wikipedia. Birthdate error

[edit]

Having already endured inordinate conflict attempting to correct the Wikipedia page for the individual in question, I have now discovered even more inexplicable misinformation at commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Larry_Charles. Specifically the birthdate indicated 20 February 1956 is not only incorrect but also apparently sourced from the Russian Wikipedia site which is certainly not reliable nor a permissible source. Upon further checking https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q722115 I also discovered a second reference for birthdate December 1, 1956 attributed to IMDb which was categorically rejected by Wikipedia when I first submitted that date myself recently. As the February 1956 error still appears in the Wikimedia Commons page sidebar, however, since I'm informed that can only be changed by a sysop, I am submitting this request to modify the sidebar accordingly. RRawpower (talk) 22:18, 23 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @RRawpower, if you mean the “Wikidata Infobox” when you said “Wikimedia Commons page sidebar” of Category:Larry Charles, the information on there are sourced directly from Wikidata. To change it, you just have to change the information at its respective Wikidata item accordingly. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 22:50, 23 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I not only specifically noted that Wikidata LINK, but made the very point that I DID change the birthdate details in question which did NOT change the Infobox I called the sidebar. Only when I proceeded to Google HOW to make such a change did the result suggest that can only be executed by a sysop. Notwithstanding taking any Google result with a huge shaker of salt, or my experience as a former Apple computer tech to know what a sysop is fwiw, seeing no change in the Infobox I resorted to this request. I also knew enough to empty my caches before refreshing the page.
Yet upon checking that page again now I see the Date of birth has been corrected to just the year, 1956. While I have always found such edits implemented throughout Wikipedia immediately in almost 20 years submitting contributions to the site, this is the first time I cannot account for the inordinate lag. Hello. I have a file stored locally on my computer that contains the 2008 United States presidential election results in Pennsylvania by precinct, akin to this file over here (results from 2012 by precinct). The problem was I created this .svg in QGIS with shapefiles downloaded from this link (which I believe is public domain by means of government work) and used precinct-level tabulation/data sourced from Dave's Redistricting (DRA). The problem is DRA's site states "© 2025 Social Good Fund for Dave's Redistricting". In addition, the election data itself may be sourced from the University of Florida's VEST, which is under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. This means that although the .svg itself is my own work (assisted by QGIS) the data used to compile it falls under a copyright gray area such that I would rather not learn what the true copyright status is the hard way (i.e.: upload then get it deleted for copyright). As such, I would like to ask more experienced people on Commons: would that be classified as free media? Thanks. — 3PPYB6TALKCONTRIBS04:57, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • What involved in any of this could possibly be copyrightable? You can't copyright facts, only an expression of facts. - Jmabel ! talk 19:26, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel – I'm afraid that the precinct data that I took off DRA might be an "expression of facts" that is copyrightable (or otherwise non-free/insufficiently free) since it's formatted slightly differently than the official government tabulations. I'm trying to avoid opening a can of worms, but I guess I'm just paranoid, and that this is free media that is permissible for upload... — 3PPYB6TALKCONTRIBS00:17, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
    • @3PPYB6: if I have read correctly above, you are proposing to upload a map based on the data, not a data page corresponding to the CSV, right? I don't see any way a map of election data could infringe the copyright of a site that published the data in tabular format. After all, they did not create the data, just formatted it. - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
      @Jmabel – Yes, that is what I'm doing (just the SVG). So I guess I'm in the clear. — 3PPYB6TALKCONTRIBS12:07, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

For several photos included in the same large set, the uploader linked to the same photo. Very minor problem, since the other photos of the set can be accessed from there. Image file improvement

[edit]

I recently created EN::Boating Party. At commons, we have two files for this work. File:Lyon 1er - Musée des Beaux-Arts - Salle 229 - Partie de bateau (Gustave Caillebotte).jpg is a 13.1 megapixel 5.79 MB version and File:G. Caillebotte - La Partie de Bâteau.jpg is a .72 megapixel .124 MB version. Both are used throughout various wikipedia articles. The higher resolution version does seem more vibrant, but it has a brown strip across the top. I think that the image has to be used with "Property P18" on Wikidata to get displayed. But that's only a guess. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 18:54, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's the issue. P18 is only meant to be used when no other suitable property exists. It was never supposed to be a dumping ground for any and all images related to the subject Trade (talk) 19:02, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Pinging the uploader @Fleets: Geoffroi 01:02, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
So {{Extracted from}} won't readily capture what is going on here, but it doesn't seem to me like there should be any difficulty describing the source, and the licensing is necessarily the same. - Jmabel ! talk 03:51, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like a good example of why COM:OVERWRITE proscribes substantive change of content. The situation appears to be one wide-view image and two cropped portions of it, so the easiest solution to solve this mess (and enhance our content collection) is to have each of them at a separate filename rather than one of the cropped portions overwriting the wie-view. The only mitigating factor is that all of these are by the same uploader, who is the license-holder, so by license they are just uploading their own work in different ways not DW of someone else's that requires attribution/provenance-tracking. DMacks (talk) 04:08, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
This was a user overwriting their own upload with a new version. That is pretty much always allowed. For many situations, it is actually a best practice: e.g. File:Seattle - Floating homes and shanties on Portage Bay from the water - 2025-07-09 - 04.jpg, File:Nicolae Vermont - Sala de așteptare - 1916.jpg. But, yes, it would probably be a good idea here to make the original version a separate file since it has multiple derivatives. - Jmabel ! talk 18:53, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Much better in English. Victory Peak Cup (1956) for example. Thank you. Tamdam (talk) 14:00, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the suggestion. However, hmmm, I would prefer to respect the language of the uploader. Correcting the factual mistake about the identification of the mountain is a valid reason for renaming. But changing the language without the consent of the uploader is not a valid reason for renaming. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:19, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Done: Special:Diff/1060966174/1061354044. I don't have qualms in changing the language (at least when it's not in latin script) towards (mostly) English when a valid renaming reason exists. add inheritance of categories

[edit]

I think it would be useful in the media viewer to either: have the "Category:Something" pages display all media of sub-categories

or

have each individual file automatically inherit super-categories for whatever categories it is added to

for instance, in "Media in category "Singapore in the 19th century"", there are 27 images, but there are also 18 subcategories, in total having another 100 images or so, which are not displayed in the media viewer for that category. These probably should all be displayed in the media viewer as well, without having to go into the sub-category pages.

The alternative would be that whenever a user adds a category, it is automatically added to any higher level category as well, and then it would display all of them as well if someone were viewing the higher level category. Wrfrancis (talk) 15:51, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Communist symbols

[edit]

File:COA of Sevastopol.svg and related files make the astonishing claim that the coat of arms of a Ukrainian city is prohibited by law in Ukraine. Is there any basis for this claim? Is there a way to remove it without deleting the communist symbol tag entirely? 98.97.15.215 20:58, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

The template was added by a user who now seems inactive. Look how the forbidden symbols are defined exactly in the article of the code and if the gold star meets the definition or not. If it does, leave the template. If it does not, remove the template from the description page. The gold star, although it is from the Soviet era, may or may not be a symbol of communism or a forbidden symbol. You have to look what the law says. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:25, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don’t speak Georgian, Indonesian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Korean, or Ukrainian, so I can’t interpret the laws cited in the template. I would assume the Ukrainian city council didn’t adopt a symbol that’s illegal in its own country, but it could be restricted in other countries. 98.97.15.215 22:53, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Laws of many countries have translations in English. When not, machine translation can give good enough results for a section of law. You can also request help from Ukrainian-and-English-speaking users on Wikipedia. I would not assume anything. It may depend on many factors, for example when the section of the code came into force and if it was enforced. After 2014, that code would have no effect on Sebastopol. Even before then, it would not necessarily be impossible that Sebastopol kept the CoA despite the law. However, I agree with you that it seems more likely that this particular symbol is simply not forbidden. But again I would not assume anything. We would need someone who is familiar with the topic. You have probably a better chance by asking at the Reference desk of Wikipedia or on a Ukraine-related project page. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:05, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

How can I use my own material on Wikipedia without getting it marked for takedown? I am currently working on this film page in my sandbox. Devesh dasani (talk) 00:16, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Devesh dasani:
  1. Although what you do on Wikipedia is not Commons' affair, I strongly recommend you read en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY before you find yourself blocked on the English-language Wikipedia. You have disclosures that you must make there, and it looks like you have not done so.
  2. Because of the nature of these files, you need to come through the VRT process. At COM:VRT is an email address; you need to communicate with the to let them know that you are, indeed the creator of those files. I'd recommend sending such correspondence from a domain associated with your business as a film director/producer, if there is such a domain. There may need to be some back-and-forth emails, but it should be possible to work it out.
  3. Also follow the instructions on COM:VRT about marking the files as "permission pending."
