최근 코스닥 새내기주들이 상장 후 큰 폭의 주가 상승세를 이어가면서 기업공개(IPO)시장에 훈풍이 불고 있습니다. 상장 직후 공모가 아래로 폭락하는 경우가 많아 여러 기업들이 청약에서도 흥행에 실패했던 지난해와 비교하면 분위기가 사뭇 달라진 모습입니다. 일찍이 회사에 투자했던 벤처캐피탈(VC)들은 상장과 동시에 유통 가능한 지분을 매도해 투자원금을 회수하거나, 남은 지분으로 높은 차익 실현을 기대할 수 있어 업계 전반에 다시 활력이 돌고 있습니다. 대표적으로 이달 초 코스닥에 입성한 인공지능(AI) 경량화·최적화 기술기업 노타는 상장 당일 공모가 대비 240% 올랐고, 상장 일주일 만에 공모가 대비 약 6배 상승했습니다. 환경시험 장비 개발기업 이노테크도 상장일인 7일 300% 폭등하는 등 증시 입성과 동시에 시장으로부터 큰 주목을 받았습니다. VC들이 높은 수익을 내고 엑시트를 할 수 있게 된 만큼 기업에 대한 투자도 더욱 활발해져야 하고, 그만큼 신규 펀드 결성도 순조로울 것이라는 관측이 나옵니다. 그러나 정작 많은 VC들이 여전히 출자 및 펀드 결성에 어려움을 겪고 있다고 토로합니다. 주요 연기금과 공제회 등 큰 자금을 굴리는 출자자(LP)들의 돈이 대형 VC로 몰리는 현상이 심화되고 있기 때문입니다. 실제로 최근 군인공제회의 블라인드펀드 출자사업 VC 부문의 위탁운용사(GP) 자리는 10개에 달했지만 이 중 운용자산(AUM)이 5000억원 이하인 곳은 두 곳에 불과했습니다. 펀드의 최소 결성액이 400억원 수준으로 낮았기 때문에 다수의 중소형 운용사들이 지원한 것으로 알려졌지만 실제로 GP 자리를 꿰찬 것은 대형 VC였습니다. 7월 진행한 교직원공제회 출자사업에서도 대형과 중형분야 모두 AUM이 8000억~1조원 수준인 대형 운용사 5곳이 GP로 선정됐습니다. 한 중소형 VC 관계자는 “벤처투자 시장은 살아난만큼 LP를 구하기 위한 운용사간의 경쟁률도 높아졌기 때문에 대형사 위주로 자금이 쏠리고, 중소형 VC는 예나 지금이나 펀딩이 쉽지 않다”며 "정부가 내년부터 정책 자금을 늘리겠다고 하지만 실제로 체감되는 개선은 좀 더 지켜봐야 한다”고 말했습니다. 펀드 운용사와 종류가 많지 않다는 것은 그만큼 다양한 스타트업에 자금이 골고루 흘러가지 못한다는 것을 의미합니다. 실제로 벤처투자 정보 플랫폼 더VC의 리포트에 따르면 올해 3분기까지 국내 벤처투자 금액은 전년과 비슷했지만 투자 건수는 34.2%나 감소했습니다. 더VC는 “소수의 검증된 기업에 큰 금액을 베팅하는 투자 성향이 지속되는 모습”이라며 “초기 라운드 투자 금액은 전년 38.3%에서 26.7%로 크게 축소됐다”고 분석했습니다. 벤처투자의 본질은 혁신성과 잠재력을 갖춘 초기 단계 스타트업을 발굴하고 씨앗을 뿌리듯 자금을 공급해 성장하도록 돕는 데 있습니다. 연기금과 공제회 등 LP 입장에서 운용사의 트랙레코드와 수익률을 중시하는 것은 당연하지만, 한편으로는 보다 다양한 VC에게 펀드 결성의 기회를 부여해 시장 생태계를 넓히는 접근도 필요합니다. 그래야만 IPO 시장의 회복이 스타트업 생태계 전반의 활성화로 이어지고, 장기적으로 혁신 기업이 꾸준히 등장하는 건강한 벤처 시장을 구축할 수 있을 것입니다. 키워드
