Getty Corporate venturing meets a venture-as-a-service model, with a new initiative developed by former Intel Capital investment director Sanjit Singh Dang. His recently launched U First Capital works with corporations as an outsourced service on identifying and funding cutting-edge technologies externally that can foster growth and realize investment returns. U First Capital is working with first client, DuPont Electronics & Imaging, to hone in on opportunities for corporate investment in artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and connectivity technologies -- strategic growth areas for the specialty products division of DowDuPont, the 2017 merger of two chemical giants DuPont and Dow Chemical. Based in Silicon Valley, U First Capital, acts as an external corporate venture unit to develop and manage venture capital funds for financial returns and growth. Its outsourcing model is customized for companies. Corporate venture has typically depended on internal venture units to look for and invest in young tech businesses as strategic growth and potentially profit-making operations. Co-founder and chairman Dang brings to U First Capital a good track record of investments during his nine-year tenure at Intel Capital, one of the most active and successful corporate venture units. At Intel Capital, he led investments in several companies that later went public or were acquired by the chip maker: DocuSign went public in 2018, Body Labs was acquired by Amazon in 2017, and VokeVR was purchased by Intel in 2016. Corporate venture has been growing as technology innovations have become more integral to growth and as tech has become more complex and far-reaching. It's also increased as startup founders turn to strategic corporate investors as valuable partners that can become their first customers and help them ramp up long-term. U First Capital also has begun working with Japanese company Ricoh and the FedEx Institute of Technology with its venture-as-a-service model. Startup enthusiast and mentor Ekta Dang brings venture capital and operations experience at Intel as the CEO and a co-founder of U First Capital. The two partners, who both have PhDs and who were team member advisers to Hillary Clinton on technology innovation policy, bring technical expertise and a network of contacts from startups, research groups and universities to seek out new generation technologies that can be leveraged and invested in by corporations.
