Related To: What you'll learn: How do multichannel fiber connections work? Why multichannel fiber connections are needed to meet AI workloads. Artificial intelligence (AI) gobbles up all available memory, compute power, and communication bandwidth. It's in this space where fiber optics shines, with the ability to deliver more bandwidth to cloud data centers. At this point, most fiber links utilize a single wavelength, but the fibers are capable of handling multiple wavelengths simultaneously. I talked with Vivek Raghunatham, CEO at Xscape Photonics , about the company's ChromX technology, which supports multiple-wavelength communication on a single fiber (watch the video above) . The CMOS silicon wafer platform is an optically pumped laser platform that can deliver more than 10X the bandwidth of a single-wavelength system while reducing overall power requirements as well (see figure) One key aspect of Xscape's approach is that the performance of each wavelength is consistent. This is important because it provides consistency at the transmit and receiver ends. These would otherwise need to be adjusted or accommodated to provide reliable communication. >>Check out this TechXchange for similar articles and videos About the Author William G.
